Railway Board Chairman and CEO Vinod Kumar Yadav announced that 700-1050 stations out of 7,000 railway stations across India will impose user charge in order to redevelop stations and to provide better facilities for passengers. This will also increase Railways revenue which will be used by them in investment.
The station redevelopment project is being considered under a public-private partnership. This means that private companies might operate some trains in India. This will cause a little bit hike in the prices of railway tickets. These charges are also imposed by airports for the redevelopment and facility purpose.
NITI Aayog chief executive officer Amitabh Kant said on Thursday that the objective is to offer 50 stations for redevelopment by the end of 2021.
According to V.K. Yadav, when the station redevelopment works are completed, the money will go to the concessionaires. Till then that money will go to the national transporter for upgrading facilities across railway stations.
